Scientific Waste Disposal, Digital Integration in Focus as MMC Reviews Waste Management Plan
The civic body has outlined a phased plan to modernise waste management through digital tools and scientific processing.
In a move to strengthen sustainable waste management, the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) has reviewed a comprehensive action plan for the scientific management of e-waste and other waste streams, with a focus on source segregation, recycling and digital integration.
A review meeting chaired by MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy discussed measures to strengthen scientific waste management, protect the environment and promote a circular economy. The meeting was attended by Uppal Zonal Commissioner Radhika Gupta, Additional Commissioner (Sanitation) Raghu Prasad, Loop Sustainability representative Ramana Reddy, and sanitation officials.
During the meeting, officials and representatives of Loop Sustainability discussed creating separate waste streams by segregating waste at the source to enable efficient collection, recycling and scientific disposal.
A presentation by the organisation covered the management of various waste categories, including electronic waste (e-waste), pooja waste, construction and demolition waste, pharmaceutical waste, paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, batteries, tyres, textiles, footwear, mattresses, vehicle waste, biomedical waste and furniture waste.
The meeting also reviewed plans to strengthen existing waste collection drop points, establish new drop points where required and expand doorstep waste collection services to improve convenience for residents.
Officials discussed the development of a QR-based digital platform, a dedicated microsite, systems for Bulk Waste Generators, pickup request generation, collection through partner organisations and user-friendly digital integration for pickup and drop services.
According to officials, the proposed system is expected to promote environmental protection, encourage recycling, improve resource utilisation, generate employment opportunities, enhance economic benefits and support the effective implementation of government policies.
Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy directed officials to implement the integrated waste management system in a phased manner to transform the city into a cleaner and more sustainable urban area. He emphasised the importance of adopting modern waste management practices to improve service delivery and strengthen the city's overall waste management framework.
