Good Architecture Is About Creating Spaces People Enjoy Living In: Architect Amita Raj
Discover Amita Raj's approach to creating functional, people-centric spaces that balance innovation with timeless design principles.

Architecture is about creating spaces that people genuinely enjoy living and working in, believes architect and interior designer Amita Raj, who has spent over two decades shaping projects with a strong focus on functionality, sustainability and the needs of the end user.
Speaking about her design philosophy, Amita says every project begins with understanding the client's lifestyle and daily requirements before translating them into functional spaces. Guided by the belief that "creativity comes from the heart," Amita says good architecture is built around people rather than passing trends. She is a co-founder of ARDES and recently launched her own practice, Yellow Door Design Studio, focusing on architecture and interior design. A graduate of the School of Planning & Architecture, JNTU, Hyderabad, Amita has worked on residential, industrial and commercial projects, as well as institutions, group housing, prefabricated structures and interiors.
On Hyderabad's rapid urban growth, Amita says future development must balance vertical expansion with livable spaces. While high-rise buildings will continue to shape the city's skyline, she believes projects should include natural light, cross ventilation, biophilic design and enough open green spaces to create healthier environments. Community living, roof gardens and shared open areas, she says, are becoming central to the way people want to live.
Sustainability remains one of the strongest themes in her work. Amita believes architects have a responsibility to encourage environmentally responsible choices while preserving local identity by integrating Indian art, crafts and cultural elements into projects.
According to Amita, clients are choosing a blend of contemporary and classical styles. While younger homeowners favour simple, minimal designs, families often prefer a balanced mix that combines modern aesthetics with timeless elements.
Artificial intelligence has made parts of the design process easier, Amita says, but it cannot replace practical architectural thinking. While AI can generate ideas quickly, architects still need to ensure designs respond to climate, context and functionality.
Inspired by the late architect Zaha Hadid's bold thinking, Amita aims to create architecture that challenges convention while remaining timeless. For her, success is measured not by appearance alone, but by spaces that remain functional, comfortable and memorable for years.
