Six-lane Musi crossing is expected to reduce monsoon traffic disruptions

A new high-level bridge connecting Moosarambagh and Amberpet is expected to open in September, improving connectivity across the Musi River and providing an alternative to the existing low-level crossing. The ₹52-crore bridge is approximately 220 metres long and 29.5 metres wide, with six lanes. It includes a 20-metre-wide carriageway for vehicles and footpaths on both sides. Construction of the main bridge has been completed, while approach road works on either side are being completed ahead of the proposed opening.

Higher bridge targets flooding

The existing Moosarambagh–Amberpet bridge is relatively low-lying and has faced disruptions during heavy rains and periods when water levels in the Musi rise. Traffic movement can be affected when water is released from the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs. The new bridge has been built at a higher elevation and is intended to remain usable during such disruptions.

Once opened, the bridge is expected to improve movement between Moosarambagh, Amberpet, Malakpet, Saidabad and Dilsukhnagar, while providing an additional route for traffic in eastern Hyderabad. The project was originally initiated several years ago, with the foundation stone laid in 2023 and construction beginning in 2024. Work subsequently faced delays linked to technical issues.

With the main structure now complete, authorities are concentrating on the remaining approach works and preparations for opening. Beyond its immediate transport function, the bridge could improve accessibility to residential and commercial areas on both sides of the Musi. Better connectivity can also reduce the impact of seasonal traffic disruptions on movement through eastern Hyderabad.

The September opening, if achieved as planned, will therefore add another higher-level crossing to an important east Hyderabad route and strengthen connectivity across the river.
