The Telangana government has proposed the construction of six-lane roads on both sides of the Musi River as part of its larger river rejuvenation plan aimed at improving urban infrastructure and restoring the river ecosystem.
According to officials, the proposed carriageways will be 30 metres wide on either side, along with an additional 9-metre service road. A 50-metre buffer zone along the river has also been planned, where no construction or residential activity will be permitted.
The riverfront roads are expected to ease traffic movement across Hyderabad by linking key stretches to major highways connecting cities such as Vijayawada, Mumbai and Bijapur.
A major junction is proposed near Budvel, close to Rajendranagar, to strengthen connectivity in the western corridor.
Officials said an elevated corridor will begin at Attapur and pass through Puranapul, Nayapul, Chaderghat and Moosarambagh, with multiple exit points planned to improve access along the route.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Musi rejuvenation project is expected to be released shortly.
Alongside infrastructure development, the project places strong emphasis on sewage management and river restoration.
Wastewater entering the Musi will be treated in three stages before being reused for industrial purposes, including supply to data centres. This is expected to reduce pollution levels and improve water quality in the river.
The government has also proposed the development of Gandhi Sarovar across nearly 200 acres as part of the riverfront initiative. The project is being designed to meet international standards and will include a statue of Mahatma Gandhi along with a public viewing space.
Officials said the project aims to ensure continuous flow in the Musi River by bringing in water from the Godavari, while maintaining the river’s natural course.
The infrastructure is also being planned to withstand heavy rainfall and flood conditions, including scenarios where water flow could reach up to 60,000 cusecs.
