DIGIPIN gives every location a digital address

India Post’s geo-coded system maps locations to 4×4 metre grids

Finding a house without a clearly defined street address can be difficult, particularly for deliveries, emergency services and digital transactions. India Post’s DIGIPIN system seeks to address that gap by giving locations across India a precise digital address based on geographical coordinates.

DIGIPIN is a 10-character geo-coded addressing system. The country is divided into small grids of approximately 4×4 metres, with a unique code assigned to each location. The code is generated using latitude and longitude information. Unlike a conventional PIN code, which identifies a larger postal area, DIGIPIN is designed to identify a much more precise location.

A digital layer, not a replacement

DIGIPIN does not replace the existing six-digit PIN code or a conventional postal address. Instead, it adds a digital layer that can be used alongside existing addressing systems. The system could have applications in e-commerce and courier deliveries, emergency response, navigation and government services. It could also be useful in rural and remote areas where streets may not have formal names or properties may not have conventional house numbers.

For real estate and property services, a precise digital location could potentially make it easier to identify properties, service locations and transaction-related addresses. India Post has developed a web application that allows users to find the DIGIPIN corresponding to their current location. The service does not require a login or registration. Users can allow the application to access their device location and obtain the code associated with that point.

In simple terms, a PIN code identifies the broader area, while DIGIPIN is intended to identify a much more precise geographical location. As digital services increasingly depend on accurate location information, such a system could provide an additional layer of certainty for everything from property identification and deliveries to emergency response and government services.
