DIGIPIN gives every location a digital address
DIGIPIN, developed by India Post, is a 10-character geo-coded digital addressing system designed to identify locations more precisely than conventional PIN codes.
India Post’s geo-coded system maps locations to 4×4 metre grids
Finding a house without a clearly defined street address can be difficult, particularly for deliveries, emergency services and digital transactions. India Post’s DIGIPIN system seeks to address that gap by giving locations across India a precise digital address based on geographical coordinates.
DIGIPIN is a 10-character geo-coded addressing system. The country is divided into small grids of approximately 4×4 metres, with a unique code assigned to each location. The code is generated using latitude and longitude information.
A digital layer, not a replacement
DIGIPIN does not replace the existing six-digit PIN code or a conventional postal address. Instead, it adds a digital layer that can be used alongside existing addressing systems.
For real estate and property services, a precise digital location could potentially make it easier to identify properties, service locations and transaction-related addresses.
In simple terms, a PIN code identifies the broader area, while DIGIPIN is intended to identify a much more precise geographical location.
