Architecture Should Be Rooted in Context, Not Trends: Ar. N. Praveen Kumar
Beyond Trends: Architecture with Purpose and Context
SAMUEL JOSHUA
Architecture should belong to its surroundings rather than follow passing trends, believes architect N. Praveen Kumar, whose design approach has been shaped by over 25 years of creating functional, sustainable and people-centric spaces. Award-winning Principal Architect and co-founder of Hyderabad-based Tru Designs, he established the firm with N. Sandhya in 2004. Since then, the studio has designed over a million square feet of residential, commercial, corporate and healthcare projects across India. Praveen also serves as the Chairperson of the Hyderabad Regional Chapter of the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID-HRC).
Describing his design philosophy, Praveen says every project begins with understanding the site. Geography, climate, local culture and the needs of future users shape every decision, while functionality and sustainability remain at the heart of his work.
Among the projects that best represent his architectural vision, The Courtyard House in Rajahmundry remains closest to his heart. Given complete creative freedom, the project allowed him to fully express his philosophy through natural ventilation, earthy materials, traditional courtyard planning and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Integrating Indian art and craftsmanship throughout the home, the project demonstrated that sustainability, culture and contemporary lifestyles can coexist without compromise.
Client aspirations remain central to every project, Praveen noted, adding that architects must first understand their clients' lifestyles and practical needs before translating them into functional and timeless spaces. Clean, contemporary designs with natural materials, warm palettes and sustainable features are among the most preferred choices for clients today. Sustainability, local culture and the surrounding environment remain the foundation of every project.
As Hyderabad continues to expand, Praveen believes architecture must serve not just individual projects but the city's long-term growth. He says preserving green spaces, improving walkability and designing for climate resilience are essential to creating a more liveable and future-ready city, with every project contributing positively to its urban fabric.
While technologies such as artificial intelligence, BIM and digital design tools have made design, coordination and execution more efficient, Praveen believes they should enhance rather than replace an architect's creativity and empathy. Looking ahead, he says the future of architecture will be shaped by smarter, sustainable and human-centric spaces that embrace innovation while remaining deeply rooted in nature, local identity and craftsmanship.
