MMC Pushes RWA-Led Greening to Keep Garbage Hotspots from Returning

In a major pre-monsoon civic drive, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy conducted extensive field inspections across multiple locations, directing officials to eliminate garbage vulnerable points (GVPs), accelerate drain desilting, strengthen mosquito control measures and expand the city's green cover.

Reviewing sanitation works at Gunti Jangaiah Colony, the Commissioner ordered the immediate removal of accumulated garbage, construction debris and soil heaps. To prevent the area from reverting into an illegal dumping site, he instructed officials to identify donors for the installation of CCTV cameras in coordination with local residents and welfare associations. The cameras will help identify violators dumping waste illegally, while dedicated monitoring teams will keep the site clean.

At Jahangir Nagar Colony, Vinay Krishna Reddy directed officials to transform the existing GVP into a green space instead of merely clearing waste. He instructed the Urban Biodiversity wing to mobilise Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from nearby commercial establishments for plantation drives and ensure long-term maintenance of the saplings through regular watering, fertilisation and protection.

With the monsoon approaching, the Commissioner inspected the main drain at Harihara Puram and set a one-week deadline to complete desilting works. Officials were directed to remove silt and obstructions to ensure the free flow of rainwater and minimise the risk of waterlogging and flooding.

During his visit to Gurram Guda Urban Forest Kunta, the Commissioner reviewed mosquito breeding-prone areas and instructed the Entomology Department to intensify anti-larval operations by applying oil balls twice a week, carrying out larvicidal measures and conducting regular surveillance to prevent the spread of dengue, malaria and chikungunya.

As part of the city's long-term urban greening strategy, the Commissioner also reviewed the Urban Biodiversity (UBD) programme and directed officials to work with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to undertake large-scale plantation drives. He instructed the department to identify suitable tall tree species and prepare an action plan to increase green cover along roads, in residential colonies and on vacant government lands.

Emphasising that sanitation, public health, greenery and monsoon preparedness remain top civic priorities, Vinay Krishna Reddy directed all departments to ensure coordinated execution of the works and appealed to citizens to support the Municipal Corporation by disposing of waste only at designated locations and participating in environmental conservation efforts.
