MMTS Boost for West Hyderabad

West Hyderabad’s rapid residential and employment growth is increasing demand for MMTS expansion and better suburban rail connectivity, particularly across Gachibowli, Financial District, Tellapur, Kollur, Patancheru and Shankarpally.

Growing residential and employment corridors seek stronger suburban rail connectivity

West Hyderabad’s rapid expansion is creating a growing need for public transport beyond the existing MMTS network. From Gachibowli and the Financial District to Nallagandla, Tellapur, Kollur, Patancheru and Shankarpally, large residential communities are coming up alongside IT, industrial and educational developments. The demand is particularly relevant because many of these locations are beyond the reach of the existing suburban rail network. Extending MMTS and improving stations could give residents and workers a lower-cost alternative to road travel.

Patancheru remains a key link

One of the long-standing MMTS proposals involves the Tellapur–Ramachandrapuram–Patancheru section. The approximately 5.75-km stretch is part of the suburban rail network towards Patancheru and has been associated with doubling and electrification works. An operational MMTS connection to Patancheru would improve access to the industrial belt while also serving the growing residential population around Tellapur and Ramachandrapuram.

Demand grows along Tellapur–Kollur belt

A further rail connection towards the Tellapur–Kollur–Bhanur–Shankarpally growth belt has been sought as development spreads beyond the ORR. Gated communities, villa projects, educational institutions and commercial developments are increasing the number of people travelling through the corridor. However, unlike the Patancheru section, a new railway line towards Shankarpally should be treated as a demand/proposal rather than an approved MMTS project. Any such extension would require detailed planning, alignment studies and approvals.

Stations need to serve new growth centres

Madeenaguda is another location where improved suburban rail access has been sought. The gap between Chandanagar and Hafeezpet, along with population growth around Madeenaguda and Miyapur, has strengthened the case for better rail access in the area. Kollur station could also require additional passenger facilities as residential development expands around the ORR exit. More entrances, platforms and station amenities could make the existing rail infrastructure more useful to surrounding communities. At Bharat Nagar, an additional entrance and passenger facilities have been proposed to improve access from the Erragadda and Sanath Nagar sides.

Airport link returns to focus

MMTS connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport remains a long-pending proposal. The earlier plan envisaged a new rail line of about 6 km from Umdanagar to Shamshabad airport. The proposal has returned to the spotlight in 2026, with railway authorities revisiting the possibility of extending MMTS to the airport. Land availability remains an important issue.

86 services, 50,000 passengers

MMTS currently operates around 86 services a day and carries approximately 50,000 passengers daily. Before the pandemic, the network operated about 121 services and carried around 1.5 lakh passengers a day, indicating considerable scope to rebuild ridership as services and connectivity improve.

Rail connectivity can reshape growth

For West Hyderabad, the significance of MMTS expansion goes beyond commuting. Better suburban rail access to Tellapur, Patancheru and other emerging growth centres could improve the attractiveness of residential projects, rentals and employment locations. As the western suburbs continue to absorb large-scale housing development, extending affordable public transport will increasingly become important to the region’s ability to grow without adding proportionately more private vehicles to already congested roads.
