Water Board MD Reviews Godavari, Neopolis Water Projects, Calls for Future-Ready Infrastructure
Future expansion, storage optimisation, and network resilience emerged as key priorities during the infrastructure review.
Calling for long-term planning in water infrastructure, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy directed officials to design ongoing projects to meet future drinking water demand as the Board's jurisdiction expands into the Comprehensive Urban Renewal and Expansion (CURE) area.
Reviewing the progress of the Godavari Phase-II & III projects and the Neopolis Integrated Drinking Water Supply Project, Ashok Reddy inspected the construction of the Godavari Phase-II & III Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Khanapur and instructed officials to complete the works within the stipulated timeline.
He also reviewed the proposed balancing reservoirs, pumping station, and water treatment plant for the Neopolis project, directing officials to earmark adequate land for future expansion and assessing the feasibility of supplying water to surrounding areas through a gravity-based system from the two 2.5-million-litre balancing reservoirs.
With land values in Neopolis rising, he directed officials to study the technical feasibility of developing the balancing reservoirs as multi-storey structures to optimise land use while accommodating future expansion. He also suggested limiting the current construction to immediate requirements and taking up additional expansion through separate tenders at a later stage.
The Managing Director directed officials to undertake detailed technical studies on trunk pipeline integration, gravity-based water flow, advance pipeline provisions to minimise disruptions during future road works, and running storage capacity sufficient for at least one day's water demand.
He further instructed officials to prepare contingency plans to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply during emergencies and engage consultants to submit a comprehensive feasibility report covering future expansion, additional storage capacity, and cost-benefit analysis.
Ashok Reddy also reviewed the scope for leveraging the existing Ring Main Network to provide alternative drinking water supply to water-scarce areas.
Earlier, along with HMDA officials, he inspected the ongoing shifting of the existing 1,200 mm diameter drinking water pipeline near Khanapur to facilitate the proposed road project.
