Tunnel roads figure in Hyd’s next mobility plans
The Telangana Government is exploring underground tunnel roads as part of Hyderabad's long-term mobility strategy to address future traffic growth.

As Hyderabad continues to expand, the Telangana Government is exploring underground tunnel roads as the next phase of the city's transport infrastructure, complementing flyovers, elevated corridors and Metro Rail expansion. The proposal is currently at the planning stage, with officials carrying out feasibility studies, traffic assessments and geological investigations to determine suitable alignments and technical viability before Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are prepared.
The initiative comes after the implementation of several flyovers, underpasses and grade separators under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP). Officials believe underground corridors could become an additional option for improving mobility in areas where conventional road widening is increasingly difficult because of urban density and land acquisition challenges. The proposal is expected to focus on major employment centres and high-traffic corridors, including Gachibowli, the Financial District, Nanakramguda, Kondapur, HITEC City and Madhapur, where traffic volumes have risen sharply over the past decade.
The proposed tunnel roads also form part of the broader H-CITI programme, under which around 38 transport infrastructure projects with an estimated investment of ₹7,032 crore have been identified to improve connectivity across Hyderabad. Officials say the studies will examine construction costs, underground conditions, traffic demand and environmental aspects before any final decisions are taken. Construction timelines and project phasing will be determined after the DPRs are completed and statutory approvals are obtained.
If implemented, tunnel roads could complement Hyderabad's multi-layered transport network, which already includes flyovers elevated corridors, underpasses, Metro Rail and the proposed Regional Ring Road. Together, these projects are expected to support the city's growing population and increasing vehicle ownership over the coming decades.
Under consideration

Part of H-CITI
• 38 infrastructure projects.
• Estimated investment: ₹7,032 crore.
Expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, complement existing road network, support future urban growth.
