12 mega interchanges to anchor RRR growth
Key highway junctions expected to emerge as future economic and development hubs
Property Pulse
The Regional Ring Road (RRR), one of Telangana's most ambitious infrastructure projects, is steadily moving towards execution with progress in approvals, land acquisition and tendering. While the 350-km corridor itself is expected to transform regional connectivity, planners believe its 12 proposed interchanges could play an equally important role in shaping Hyderabad's next phase of expansion.
Designed on a scale larger than many existing junctions on the Outer Ring Road, the interchanges will come up at locations where the RRR intersects with major national and state highways. These include highways connecting Mumbai, Nagpur, Karimnagar, Warangal, Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Srisailam.
Officials say the interchanges are being designed to facilitate uninterrupted movement between major transport corridors through ramps, service roads and grade-separated connections. Apart from improving travel efficiency, the infrastructure is expected to support freight movement, logistics operations and industrial connectivity across Telangana.
The RRR has been divided into two sections. The northern corridor, spanning around 161 km, will connect Sangareddy, Narsapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Jagdevpur, Bhongir and Choutuppal. The southern corridor, covering nearly 189 km, will extend through Amangal and Shadnagar before reconnecting with Sangareddy.
Originally proposed as a four-lane corridor, the project has since been upgraded to a six-lane access-controlled expressway designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph. The northern section recently received approval from the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee of the Centre and will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model at an estimated cost of ₹23,935 crore.
The Telangana government is also preparing long-term development plans around the corridor. Satellite townships, industrial parks, logistics hubs and warehousing clusters are being considered near key interchanges. Industry observers believe these locations could witness substantial economic activity over the next two decades.
Real estate markets along the proposed alignment have already begun responding. Locations such as Bhongir, Choutuppal, Toopran, Gajwel, Shadnagar and Amangal have witnessed increased investor interest following the announcement of the project.
Just as the ORR played a defining role in Hyderabad's expansion over the past two decades, policymakers expect the RRR to create a new development ring around the metropolitan region, improving connectivity while opening up new growth corridors across Telangana.
