Y-Connector flyover planned

Hyderabad is considering a new Y-shaped flyover project aimed at easing congestion along the heavily trafficked Nampally–Assembly–Lakdikapul corridor.

1.5-km elevated corridor behind Assembly may provide faster access to Masab Tank and Khairatabad

Hyderabad may soon see another major urban mobility project aimed at easing congestion in one of the city's busiest traffic corridors. Authorities are reportedly examining a proposal for a Y-shaped flyover connecting the Nampally-Assembly-Lakdikapul stretch with Masab Tank and Khairatabad. The proposed elevated corridor, stretching about 1.5 km from the Public Gardens area to Lakdikapul, is designed to provide an alternative route for vehicles travelling through the heart of the city. At Lakdikapul, the flyover is expected to split into two branches, creating direct connectivity towards Masab Tank and Khairatabad through a Y-shaped configuration.

The Nampally-Lakdikapul corridor remains one of Hyderabad's most heavily trafficked stretches due to the presence of the State Assembly, government offices, commercial establishments and the Nampally railway station. Traffic congestion frequently intensifies during Assembly sessions and peak office hours, resulting in delays and bottlenecks.According to preliminary plans, the flyover is expected to originate near the Telugu University area and pass through the Public Gardens precinct before running behind the Assembly complex. It will then follow the railway corridor towards Lakdikapul, where it will branch out towards Masab Tank and Khairatabad.

One of the major advantages of the proposal is that much of the alignment is expected to pass through government-owned land. Officials are reportedly exploring a design that minimises private land acquisition, reducing the likelihood of legal disputes and delays that often affect major infrastructure projects. The project is also expected to provide a signal-free route for motorists travelling from the Nampally side towards Masab Tank and Khairatabad.  Authorities are studying traffic patterns and are reportedly evaluating whether the flyover should operate as a predominantly one-way corridor to maximise efficiency.

Hyderabad has already witnessed significant improvements in traffic flow through flyovers and underpasses constructed under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP). If approved, the proposed Y-Connector Flyover could become another important addition to the city's urban mobility network, particularly in the densely developed core city area where widening existing roads is often difficult. While detailed planning and feasibility studies are reportedly underway, the project is already attracting attention as a potential long-term solution to congestion in one of Hyderabad's most critical traffic zones.
