Telangana seeks Centre’s support for a water-based connection between Hussain Sagar and Prakasam Barrage
Property Pulse
Hyderabad and Vijayawada could get a new mode of connectivity if a proposal to operate seaplane services between Hussain Sagar and Prakasam Barrage takes off. The Telangana government has asked the Centre to examine the feasibility of the route, which could link the two Telugu states through water-based aviation. The proposal is still at the feasibility and planning stage. Technical studies, identification of suitable water aerodrome infrastructure and regulatory and safety clearances would be required before any service can begin.
Hussain Sagar to Prakasam Barrage
The proposed route would connect Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad with Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, providing an alternative to conventional road and air connectivity between the two cities. During discussions with the union civil aviation ministry in July, Telangana sought an examination of the route’s feasibility. The Centre subsequently indicated that the necessary proposals could be submitted for consideration. Unlike conventional aircraft, seaplanes can take off from and land on designated water surfaces. However, this does not eliminate the need for supporting infrastructure. A viable service would require suitable water aerodrome facilities, passenger access, navigation systems, safety arrangements and regulatory clearances.
Prakasam Barrage has precedent
The proposed Vijayawada end of the route has already figured in the Centre’s plans for water-based aviation. In a Rajya Sabha response in 2021, the Centre said a Hyderabad–Prakasam Barrage–Hyderabad seaplane route had been identified under the UDAN scheme. Andhra Pradesh also gained some practical experience with the concept when a seaplane demonstration was conducted from Prakasam Barrage to Srisailam in November 2024. The earlier initiatives do not mean that a regular Hyderabad–Vijayawada service has been approved. The latest proposal will have to go through feasibility assessment and the required approvals.
Tourism opportunity
A water-based connection could potentially support weekend tourism, short leisure packages and other tourism activities built around the two cities and their surrounding destinations. It could also add a new dimension to water-based tourism in both states. For now, however, the proposal remains a possibility rather than a confirmed service. Its progress will depend on technical feasibility, water conditions, environmental and safety considerations, infrastructure requirements and regulatory approvals.
Route Plan
- Hussain Sagar to Prakasam Barrage.
- Hyderabad to Vijayawada proposed connection.
- Water aerodrome infrastructure required.
- Prakasam Barrage identified under UDAN.
- Seaplane demonstration held in 2024.
- Feasibility study and approvals pending.
