Declining water levels in the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs have prompted the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to prepare an alternative supply arrangement by diverting Godavari water to the areas dependent on these sources, ahead of anticipated El Niño conditions.

Following Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s instructions, the Water Board took up pipeline interconnection works near Velimela village, close to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), to strengthen the city’s drinking water supply during periods of scarcity.

The project involves connecting the 3,000 mm-diameter Godavari Ring Main with the 1,200 mm-diameter Manjeera Phase-III and IV gravity main pipelines. The link is intended to enable Godavari water to reach the Singur-Manjeera supply areas when required.

Water Board Technical Director Prabhu and Chief General Manager Rajasekhar inspected the progress of the works at Velimela. They directed officials to expedite the work and complete the necessary arrangements to integrate Godavari water into the existing supply network.

The initiative is part of the Board’s preparations to minimise the risk of drinking water shortages in the city as El Niño conditions could affect water availability. The Water Board is working under the supervision of Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy to put alternative supply arrangements in place.

Once the pipeline connections are completed, the Board will be able to divert Godavari water to areas served by the Singur-Manjeera system, helping maintain drinking water supplies and reduce the possibility of disruptions during periods of water scarcity.
