Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s lake conservation efforts will need coordination across civic boundaries, with three municipal corporations working together to protect and rejuvenate water bodies in Hyderabad following the restructuring of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The issue was a key focus of a workshop held in Hyderabad on Monday, where the Telangana government and France’s Bordeaux Métropole signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The one-day workshop on ‘Lake Rejuvenation and Water Resource Conservation’ was jointly organised by Bordeaux Métropole and the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) at Bella Vista. It brought together government officials, civic authorities and experts to discuss international experience, technical expertise and innovative solutions for lake conservation and sustainable water management.

Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary to the Telangana government, inaugurated the workshop. Vinay Krishna Reddy, Commissioner of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, attended alongside HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy and Dr B. Janardhan Reddy, a retired IAS officer and Director of Research Studies and the CEUG&ID Centre at ASCI.

Experts from Bordeaux and representatives of government departments, urban local bodies, regulatory agencies, academic institutions, voluntary organisations and the innovation sector also participated.

Collective Efforts Needed

The restructuring of GHMC into three municipal corporations has made coordination among the civic bodies important for protecting and rejuvenating lakes across the metropolitan region.

The workshop highlighted that water conservation cannot be handled by a single agency, requiring collective efforts from government departments, municipal bodies, technical experts, and environmental organisations.

The discussions focused on adapting international experience and technical solutions to local conditions to improve water resource management. For Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, a key priority is to protect lakes and other water bodies within its jurisdiction and preserve clean water resources for future generations.
