Hyderabad: With concerns over potential water scarcity due to El Niño putting water conservation in focus in Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has stepped up enforcement across the city, imposing fines and cancelling registrations over water misuse. In its latest action, the board has fined Hotel Paradise ₹20,000 for misusing drinking water.

Water Board officials from Division 16 in the Khairatabad zone identified the violation during an inspection of the hotel, registered under Consumer Account Number (CAN) 612182839. Following the inspection, the board imposed the penalty and instructed the management to use water judiciously and avoid wastage.

For Hyderabad’s high-rise apartments, gated communities, and commercial establishments, efficient water management is essential to meet daily requirements while conserving available supplies. El Niño-related concerns have further highlighted the need to minimise avoidable consumption of drinking water.

Simple measures, such as using buckets instead of running hoses to wash vehicles and clean premises, can help reduce wastage. Residential communities and businesses can also use treated wastewater for suitable non-potable purposes, reducing their dependence on drinking water supplies.

The HMWSSB has called on the public and commercial establishments to participate in efforts to prevent drinking water wastage. The board has also warned that violations involving water misuse will invite action under the applicable rules.
