While Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and facility management teams invest in security, landscaping and common amenities, experts say regular cleaning of underground and overhead water storage tanks is equally important for maintaining water quality.

Over time, storage tanks can accumulate sediment, rust particles, algae and other impurities. If tanks are not cleaned at regular intervals, water quality may deteriorate, affecting its suitability for drinking, cooking and other household uses. Experts note that poor water quality can increase the risk of waterborne illnesses and affect vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and people with weakened immunity.

Communities that depend largely on borewell water may require more frequent maintenance because of higher mineral content and sediment. Regular inspection of tank covers, vents, pipelines and overflow arrangements is also important to minimise the risk of contamination.

Apart from water quality, routine cleaning can also improve the performance and lifespan of pumps, pipelines and plumbing fixtures by preventing sludge accumulation and blockages. Preventive maintenance is often more economical than addressing problems after they arise.

Experts advise RWAs and apartment management committees to maintain a regular cleaning schedule, keep maintenance records and carry out periodic water quality testing. Residents can also enquire about the cleaning schedule followed in their community as part of good maintenance practices.
