Hyderabad launches lake restoration works across 46 water bodies to improve urban environment and water quality. Learn how such initiatives enhance Hyderabad real estate value and livability.

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has initiated a large-scale drive to restore lakes across its jurisdiction, targeting 46 water bodies with a focus on removing water hyacinth and improving overall water quality.

The exercise is aimed at addressing mosquito breeding in surrounding residential areas while strengthening long-term lake management. The initiative aligns with the State government’s emphasis on urban environmental upkeep, particularly in tackling seasonal health concerns linked to stagnant water bodies. The programme aligns with the State government’s focus on lake rejuvenation, with chief minister A. Revanth Reddy emphasising the need for systematic intervention.

Currently, restoration works are underway in 11 lakes across multiple circles. These include Gopi Cheruvu and Chakalivani Cheruvu in Serilingampally, Raiasamudram Lake in Ameenpur, Parki Cheruvu and Ambeer Cheruvu in Allwyn Colony, Kamuni Cheruvu and Mysamma Cheruvu in Kukatpally, Fox Sagar Lake in Kompally, and Meedi Kunta in Nizampet.

According to CMC officials, works have already been completed at Durgam Cheruvu and Alitalab Lake.

Commissioner G. Srijana said that around 2.34 lakh square metres of water hyacinth has been identified for removal across the 46 lakes. The current phase focuses on clearing dense weed growth, improving water flow and strengthening long-term maintenance of lake ecosystems.

The remaining lakes will be taken up in subsequent phases, with the civic body undertaking regular monitoring to ensure timely execution of works across all locations.
