– Mumbai issues air pollution control guidelines**

With air pollution levels rising alarmingly in Mumbai, the government has initiated several control measures. As part of this, strict guidelines have been issued for construction sites:

  • Sites with buildings above 70 meters or larger than one acre must install 35-ft metal barricades around the perimeter.

  • Sites below one acre must install 25-ft barricades.

  • Metro, bridge, and flyover construction must also use 25-ft barricades.

  • All under-construction buildings must be completely covered with green cloth, jute sheets, or tarpaulin.

  • During demolition, buildings must be fully covered top to bottom, with continuous water spraying.

  • Water fogging is mandatory during material loading/unloading.

  • Earthwork, debris handling, and loose soil movement must be done with water sprinkling.

  • Anti-smog guns are compulsory on-site.

  • Cutting, drilling, grinding, and sawing must be done in enclosed areas with continuous water fogging.

  • All construction material trucks must be fully covered and must not be overloaded.

  • Tire-washing systems are mandatory at exit points.

  • Heavy diesel vehicles older than 8 years are not allowed in Mumbai limits.

  • Construction sites must have CCTV coverage, monitoring overloaded trucks and tire cleanliness.

  • Sensor-based pollution monitoring systems must be installed.

  • Construction debris must be transported only to BMC-authorised C&D waste dumping sites.

  • All workers, supervisors, and site managers must wear protective masks, safety goggles, and helmets.

  • BMC will deploy night squads to prevent illegal dumping of waste.

  • Burning of debris anywhere in Mumbai is strictly prohibited.

  • Loose soil and construction material must be covered and barricaded.

  • These materials cannot be stored on roads, footpaths, or open areas.

  • All major roads around construction sites must be cleaned daily using vacuum sweepers, water sprinkling, or brushing.
