Telangana Plans 130-Acre Golf Course Near Shamirpet, Somasila Project Also Proposed

Telangana is planning new golf infrastructure as part of a broader push to develop golf tourism and tourism-linked infrastructure across the State, with projects planned in emerging locations beyond Hyderabad. 

Tourism, Culture and Archaeology Minister Jupally Krishna Rao announced the 130-acre golf course at Jawahar Nagar near Shamirpet while speaking at a press conference held in connection with the 12th Telangana Golconda Masters at Hyderabad Golf Club, Golconda. He also said the government is working on plans for another world-class golf course at Somasila. The proposed projects are aimed at creating international-standard golfing facilities and attracting professional and amateur golfers from across the world.

Jupally added that the Somasila project is proposed along a stretch of the Krishna River, surrounded by the Nallamala forests and located in the vicinity of the Amrabad Tiger Reserve. He said the natural setting offers an opportunity to develop a distinctive golf tourism destination combining sport, nature and tourism.

The Somasila development is proposed through private participation under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The government plans to facilitate international-standard facilities, with private participation forming part of the proposed development model.

The Minister said the Telangana Government is keen to utilise former India cricket captain Kapil Dev’s experience to promote tourism and sports in the State. He noted that Telangana’s tourism potential extends beyond Hyderabad, with its lakes, forests, rivers, palaces and forts offering opportunities to develop new tourism destinations.

For the real estate sector, the proposals could add new tourism and recreational destinations to areas outside Hyderabad’s established development corridors. Such destination projects could also support demand for related hospitality, leisure and visitor-oriented infrastructure.

The Jawahar Nagar proposal is relevant to the wider Shamirpet growth belt, where residential, institutional and leisure developments have emerged. The proposed 130-acre facility would add another large recreational asset to the area.

Somasila presents a different development setting, with its riverfront location and proximity to forests and wildlife areas. Any future development around the project would depend on factors such as connectivity, statutory approvals, environmental requirements and the availability of supporting infrastructure.
