Government plans to cancel allotments as houses remain unoccupied

Thousands of government-built two-bedroom houses under Hyderabad's affordable housing scheme remain unoccupied despite strong demand for affordable housing. Of the 61,000 completed 2BHK units within GHMC limits, nearly 12,000 allotted houses are yet to be occupied, prompting the government to initiate action against beneficiaries who have failed to move in.

Around 92,000 houses received administrative approval under the previous government within GHMC limits. While 61,000 units have been completed, another 21,838 houses are under various stages of construction.

So far, approximately 23,500 houses have been allotted to beneficiaries. However, official estimates suggest that nearly 12,000 allottees have not occupied their homes.

Officials attribute the poor occupancy mainly to the location of several housing colonies, particularly in areas such as Kollur, where beneficiaries cite limited employment opportunities, inadequate public transport and the distance from workplaces and schools as reasons for not relocating.

The government has started issuing notices to beneficiaries who have failed to occupy their allotted houses. Those who do not respond or refuse to take possession may have their allotments cancelled, enabling the houses to be reassigned to other eligible families awaiting affordable housing.

The move is aimed at improving occupancy in completed housing projects, ensuring better utilisation of public investment and extending the benefits of the scheme to deserving beneficiaries.
