Water Board Mandates Private STPs to Register by Oct 1 for Treated Water Reuse

Private sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Hyderabad must complete registration with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) by October 1, 2026, as the water utility moves to create a database of private STPs and promote the reuse of treated wastewater.

The initiative covers STPs operated by private residential colonies, apartment communities, commercial establishments and industries. The Water Board will survey and geo-tag these facilities and link their details with its database to build a record of their treatment capacity and treated-water availability.

Details including the treatment capacity, daily quantity of treated water and water quality parameters such as COD, BOD, pH and TSS will be recorded. Private STPs that meet the prescribed standards and are willing to supply treated wastewater will be identified as registered suppliers.

The treated water will be used for gardening, industrial requirements, cleaning, construction activities and other non-potable purposes. The Water Board plans to make treated water available from STPs located close to areas where it is required.

HMWSSB officials will conduct periodic inspections to check whether registered STPs are maintaining the required water quality standards. Operators will also be provided access to a dedicated online portal to update the quantity of treated water available at their facilities.

The system is intended to reduce the use of fresh water for non-drinking purposes while creating a more organised network for treated wastewater reuse. It will also allow the Water Board to monitor the performance of private STPs and the quality of treated water being supplied.

For registration, private STP operators have to use the Quick Links and then Private STP Registration section on the HMWSSB website. Applicants must submit details including the CAN number, applicant or society name, STP capacity, technical information, water quality parameters, geo-location, photographs of the STP and EPTRI certification. 

All private STP operators under its jurisdiction have been asked to complete the registration process. The initiative is expected to create a structured system for tracking treated wastewater availability and connecting private STPs with users who need it for non-potable purposes, while reducing pressure on fresh water resources.
