Water Board Imposes Rs 1 Lakh Fine on Jubilee Hills Commercial Establishment for Illegal STP Water Discharge
The Water Board warns of tougher enforcement as it steps up action against violations of treated wastewater reuse norms.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has launched a crackdown on establishments discharging treated water from private Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) onto public roads without permission.
During a recent inspection, officials found a commercial establishment on Road No. 82, Jubilee Hills, releasing treated STP water onto a public road. The unauthorised discharge caused waterlogging, disrupted traffic movement, and created unhygienic conditions, leading to inconvenience for commuters.
The Water Board issued a statutory notice directing the establishment to immediately stop the discharge and ensure that treated wastewater is reused in accordance with regulatory norms. The management has also been asked to submit a compliance report within 48 hours.
The establishment has been fined Rs 1 lakh for causing public inconvenience. HMWS&SB warned that failure to pay the penalty within three days would attract additional fines, suspension of drinking water and sewerage services, and legal action.
The Board directed all residential, commercial, educational, and industrial establishments operating STPs to ensure that treated wastewater is reused in accordance with prescribed guidelines. It warned that the unauthorised discharge of treated water onto public roads or other prohibited locations would attract stringent action.
