MMC Commissioner Inspects Coir, Cocopeat Units to Review Waste-to-Resource Processes

The civic body is assessing ways to convert biodegradable waste into useful products while strengthening sustainable urban waste management.

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy inspected a coir industry in Kuntloor and a cocopeat processing unit in Karinguda to review the processing of biodegradable materials and the potential for converting waste into value-added products.

During his visit to the coir industry in Kuntloor village under the Nagole Circle, the Commissioner reviewed the unit’s operations, production process, use of waste materials and the manufacture of value-added products.

He also held discussions with industry representatives on raw material procurement, production capacity, machinery usage, market demand, sales systems, supplies to government and private sectors, and the challenges faced by the industry.

The Commissioner reviewed the scope for scientifically utilising biodegradable waste to manufacture value-added products and stressed the need to support industries that promote environmentally sustainable waste processing.

Later, he visited a cocopeat processing unit in Karinguda under the Ghatkesar area along with Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) Raghu Prasad, Ghatkesar Deputy Commissioner Vani and officials from the solid waste management wing. He inspected the cocopeat production process and reviewed the potential for processing wet and biodegradable waste into value-added products.

The Commissioner directed officials to conduct a detailed study on the potential of such waste-processing units and identify opportunities to strengthen sustainable solid waste management. He said the MMC would extend the necessary support to eco-friendly industries that contribute to waste processing and promote technologies that convert waste into useful resources.

Coir and cocopeat processing can help divert biodegradable materials from conventional disposal systems and convert them into usable products for agriculture, horticulture and other sectors. The inspection of these units comes as the civic body focuses on strengthening resource recovery and scientific waste management.
