India South Central region strengthens city’s cloud and AI ecosystem

Microsoft has opened its India South Central datacenter region in Telangana, strengthening Hyderabad’s position as a major hub for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The new region has been designated as a strategic hub serving India, Asia and the Global South. The opening comes as Telangana’s data-centre ecosystem expands rapidly.

More than 2.5 GW of data-centre capacity is either operational or under development across major global and Indian operators, with new facilities increasingly designed for AI-scale computing, high-density GPUs, hyperscale cloud and advanced cooling. Companies including Microsoft, AWS, Iron Mountain, CtrlS, Sify, TCL, NTT DATA and CapitaLand are investing in large-scale data-centre infrastructure in the state.

Telangana is targeting 5 GW of data-centre capacity by 2029, with around US$30 billion in potential investment across the broader AI and digital infrastructure ecosystem. The state attributes this growth to its infrastructure, technology talent, academic institutions and innovation ecosystem, which includes more than 500 global capability centres (GCCs).

Microsoft said its India South Central region is its fourth cloud region in India and has a resilient three-zone architecture designed to expand with customer demand. The company said the facility builds on its more than two-decade presence in Hyderabad across engineering, innovation, cloud infrastructure and AI.

Microsoft said the facility operates with effectively zero water use for cooling. For Hyderabad, the significance extends beyond the physical facility. The expansion of hyperscale cloud and AI infrastructure can strengthen the city’s technology ecosystem by bringing advanced computing capacity closer to businesses, researchers, developers and technology talent.
