Property Pulse
Hyderabad is set to add three more pedestrian skywalks as the government steps up efforts to improve road safety and strengthen last-mile connectivity to public transport. The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) has identified LB Nagar, Dilsukhnagar and Ikea Junction for the next phase of skywalk development at some of the city's busiest traffic corridors.
The proposed facilities are aimed at reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles at major junctions that witness heavy traffic throughout the day. The locations also serve as important interchange points for Metro rail, buses and commercial activity, making safe pedestrian movement a growing priority. According to officials, the new skywalks will incorporate escalators, elevators, ramps for persons with disabilities, covered walkways, CCTV surveillance and improved lighting.
The design is intended to make the structures accessible while encouraging greater use by commuters of all age groups. The proposals build on Hyderabad's ongoing programme to expand pedestrian infrastructure. The 360-degree skywalk at Uppal has already been opened to the public, while the Mehdipatnam skywalk is ready for inauguration.
Similar projects are also being planned at Secunderabad and JNTU Junction as part of a wider effort to create a more pedestrian-friendly transport network.
Among the proposed projects, the IKEA Junction skywalk is expected to provide a direct pedestrian connection between Raidurg Metro Station, Mindspace IT Park and the Ikea store. The facility is expected to benefit thousands of IT employees and visitors by allowing them to avoid crossing one of the city's busiest roads.
At Dilsukhnagar, the proposed skywalk will integrate the Metro station, RTC bus bay and nearby residential neighbourhoods, improving transfers between different modes of transport. The LB Nagar project is planned to connect the Metro station, bus terminal and surrounding commercial areas, making access safer and more convenient for daily commuters.
Officials believe the proposed skywalks will strengthen integration between Metro rail, bus services and pedestrian infrastructure while improving road safety at key intersections.
