HMDA proposes elevated link from GVK One to PVNR Expressway to ease congestion on key airport corridor

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning a major elevated corridor project aimed at improving connectivity between central Hyderabad and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The proposed project involves the construction of a nearly 4-km elevated skyway connecting GVK One Mall in Banjara Hills directly to the PVNR Expressway, creating a faster and more seamless route to the airport. Preliminary surveys have already begun, while a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently under preparation. The project is intended to address one of Hyderabad's most persistent traffic bottlenecks. While the PVNR Expressway provides rapid access to Shamshabad Airport, commuters frequently encounter heavy congestion between GVK One, Masab Tank and Lakdikapul, particularly during peak hours. Officials believe the proposed skyway will provide a signal-free connection from the city's central business districts to the airport corridor, significantly reducing travel delays.

According to preliminary plans, the elevated corridor will originate near GVK One Mall, pass through the Masab Tank stretch and merge directly with the existing PVNR Expressway. Vehicles travelling from Begumpet, Panjagutta and surrounding areas will be able to access the airport route with fewer interruptions and reduced dependence on surface-level traffic junctions. The proposal also includes a network of ramps to  improve accessibility. A down-ramp near Road No. 12 is expected to facilitate access to Banjara Hills Road Nos. 0 and 12 for airport-bound and incoming traffic. Additional connectivity options are being explored for commuters travelling from Khairatabad, Somajiguda and Chintalbasti.

An up-ramp near NMDC has also been proposed to enable direct access from the Lakdikapul-Masab Tank corridor. Once completed, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion around GVK One, Taj Krishna, CARE Hospitals and Masab Tank, while improving travel reliability for airport passengers. The DPR will determine the final alignment, project cost, technical specifications and land acquisition requirements. Officials are targeting completion within the next two years, subject to approvals and execution schedules. The proposed skyway is expected to become another important addition to Hyderabad’s expanding urban mobility network, complementing existing flyovers, elevated corridors and expressways developed over the past decade.
