TG Charts Roadmap to Transform Jawaharnagar Into National Model for Sustainable Waste Management

The Telangana government has drawn up a comprehensive action plan to transform Jawaharnagar into a national model for sustainable waste management, with a focus on scientific landfill remediation, waste-to-energy, biogas production and infrastructure development in surrounding residential areas.

The initiative was reviewed during a high-level inspection led by Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), who visited the Jawaharnagar Waste-to-Energy Plant (Phase I), landfill and nearby colonies along with Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, officials from IIT Bombay and other stakeholders. 

During the inspection, officials reviewed the operations of the Waste-to-Energy Plant, including waste collection, electricity generation, pollution control measures and emission management systems. They also assessed scientific landfill remediation techniques, including legacy waste processing, land restoration, leachate management, methane gas control and odour mitigation.

The review also covered advanced biogas technologies that convert organic waste into fuel, electricity and organic manure, with discussions focusing on reducing landfill dependence, increasing resource recovery and adopting modern waste management technologies.

Jayesh Ranjan also visited YSR Nagar and Gabbilalapet, where he interacted with residents and reviewed civic issues, including drinking water supply, roads, sanitation, street lighting, drainage, healthcare services, education and employment opportunities. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive development plan aimed at improving the quality of life in Jawaharnagar and surrounding localities alongside strengthening waste management.

He also instructed officials to strengthen source-level segregation of wet and dry waste, improve door-to-door waste collection and ensure the scientific management of municipal solid waste to create cleaner and healthier urban environments.

Jayesh Ranjan said the government aims to develop Jawaharnagar into a national model for sustainable waste management by integrating environmental protection, scientific solid waste management, public health, modern technology and socio-economic development. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive development plan that not only strengthens waste management but also improves civic infrastructure, creates sustainable employment opportunities, promotes skill development, enhances healthcare and education, and improves the quality of life of residents in and around Jawaharnagar.
