Telangana is looking to expand the homestay sector as part of efforts to take tourism beyond established destinations and create additional income opportunities for local families. The proposed approach would encourage residents to offer rooms in their homes to tourists, particularly in areas near tourist attractions, rural destinations and heritage locations where conventional accommodation may be limited.
The model would allow homeowners to use existing properties rather than make the larger investment required for hotels or resorts. The government is expected to focus on guidelines, training and certification, along with standards for cleanliness, safety and quality of accommodation.

Local experience

Unlike conventional hotels, homestays can give visitors an opportunity to experience local food, traditions and everyday life. Telangana’s rural culture, traditional cuisine, folk arts, festivals and agriculture-based activities could become part of the visitor experience.
The availability of homestays could also support tourism in destinations beyond Hyderabad. In places where hotel capacity is limited, additional accommodation could encourage visitors to stay longer and explore nearby attractions.
The economic impact could extend beyond the host families. Restaurants, local transport operators, handicraft sellers, guides and producers of local goods could benefit from increased tourist activity.

Opportunity for families

The model could provide households with an additional source of income without requiring family members to move to cities for employment. Women and other family members could participate in cooking, housekeeping, guest management and introducing visitors to local attractions.
However, expansion of the sector would require clear standards and effective monitoring. Registration, classification, inspections and compliance requirements could help ensure that homestays meet basic safety and hygiene standards.
Training would also be important, particularly for families with no previous hospitality experience. Areas such as guest management, cleanliness, food safety and emergency procedures would need to be covered. Certification of eligible properties could give tourists greater confidence when choosing homestays.

Beyond Hyderabad

Telangana has a range of tourism assets, including historic monuments, temples, forts, forests, water bodies and tribal destinations. Expanding accommodation options could help connect more of these locations to the tourism economy. For tourists, the model could provide a more local experience. Its success, however, will depend on clear regulations, quality standards, training and adequate oversight as the sector expands.
