Musi rejuvenation project to be launched in August

The Telangana government is set to launch the first phase of the Musi River Rejuvenation and Beautification Project in August, marking the beginning of one of the state's largest urban infrastructure and environmental restoration initiatives. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is expected to lay the foundation stone during the second week of the month.

The launch follows the State Cabinet's approval of ₹7,345.12 crore in administrative sanctions for the project's first phase. Officials have accelerated the tendering process and are conducting regular review meetings to ensure work begins as scheduled.

The first phase will cover a 21-km stretch from the catchment areas of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar to Bapu Ghat. Planned works include river cleaning, flood mitigation measures, riverfront development, green corridors, walking tracks, landscaping and modern sewage treatment infrastructure aimed at restoring the polluted river.

A substantial portion of the project cost will be financed through a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with the balance being funded by state government agencies.

The government plans to extend the rejuvenation programme across the river's 55-km stretch in subsequent phases. The long-term vision includes preventing untreated sewage from entering the river, strengthening flood management, creating public riverfront spaces, expanding green areas and developing pedestrian-friendly corridors.

The project has also generated debate over land acquisition, rehabilitation and the removal of structures along the river corridor. The government, however, says the initiative is focused on pollution control, flood prevention and the creation of sustainable urban infrastructure while ensuring rehabilitation measures are implemented.
