MMC Reviews C&D Waste Systems, Explores Ways to Turn Aquatic Weeds into Useful Resources

With construction and demolition waste emerging as a growing urban management challenge, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) is reviewing its systems for the collection, transportation and scientific processing of C&D waste, while also examining ways to convert aquatic weeds removed from lakes into useful resources.

MMC Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy conducted inspections at key waste management facilities and issued directions to strengthen scientific waste processing. At the Nirmala Bio-Engineering Plant in Quthbullapur, he reviewed the process of converting water hyacinth removed from lakes into organic manure. 

He directed officials to study the carting and tipping costs involved in transporting water hyacinth from lakes to the processing plant and examine sustainable ways to convert the waste into a resource.

The Commissioner later inspected the C&D waste processing plant at Fathullaguda and held a review meeting with plant officials and representatives of the operating agency. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan for the timely collection, transportation and scientific processing of C&D waste generated within the MMC limits.

Vinay Krishna also called for adequate vehicles and staff to ensure that C&D waste is collected from all areas without delay and transported to the processing centre. He directed officials to strengthen field-level monitoring to prevent the illegal dumping of construction waste.

The Commissioner directed all departments to work in coordination to strengthen scientific solid waste management and support the development of a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable Malkajgiri.

The inspections highlight the civic body’s focus on improving waste collection and processing systems as Malkajgiri continues to manage waste generated from construction activity and urban development, while also exploring ways to recover value from other waste streams.
