MMC Commissioner Reviews Lakes, Stormwater Drainage Network, Flood Preparedness Amid Monsoon

As part of its monsoon preparedness efforts, the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) has intensified its focus on lake safety, stormwater management and flood mitigation in vulnerable areas. MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy inspected Saroor Nagar Lake and several flood-prone localities to review preparedness measures and prevent waterlogging during heavy rains.

Accompanied by officials from engineering, town planning, sanitation and disaster response wings, the Commissioner also visited Sharada Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, Gaddi Annaram, Saroor Nagar, Vijayapuri Colony and Ramakrishna Puram, reviewing drainage infrastructure, nala connectivity and lake management systems.

A key focus of the inspection was Saroor Nagar Lake, where Vinay Krishna Reddy reviewed inflow channels, water connectivity networks and overflow discharge routes. He directed officials to ensure that excess water released from the lake during periods of heavy rainfall does not impact nearby residential colonies or road networks. Authorities were instructed to keep inflow and outflow channels free of obstructions to facilitate smooth water movement and reduce flood risks.

Earlier, at Sharada Nagar in Dilsukhnagar, the Commissioner inspected floodwater drains and underground drainage connectivity systems, directing officials to accelerate nala cleaning works, remove encroachments and ensure free flow of stormwater. At Gaddi Annaram, he reviewed the nala network and ordered intensified desilting and cleaning operations to prevent blockages and flooding.

He also reviewed the stormwater drainage system along Dilsukhnagar Main Road and instructed officials to prevent water stagnation on key roads, particularly those connected to Metro corridors, to ensure smooth traffic movement during heavy rains.

In Vijayapuri Colony and Ramakrishna Puram, Vinay Krishna Reddy inspected low-lying areas and drainage connectivity, directing officials to strengthen flood-prevention measures and ensure stormwater drains remain operational. He also reviewed the availability of maintenance equipment and called for the immediate procurement of additional machinery where required.

The Commissioner further reviewed fogging and anti-larval operations in Vijayapuri Colony and directed officials to intensify mosquito-control measures and sanitation efforts around nalas and waterlogged areas.

To strengthen monsoon preparedness, he instructed officials to closely monitor drainage infrastructure, expedite desilting works and implement flood-mitigation measures on priority to minimise inconvenience to residents and commuters.
