Two six-lane structures and a ramp planned under H-CITY

Hyderabad’s Old City is set for a major traffic infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing congestion and improving movement across key South Hyderabad corridors. Under the H-CITY (Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure) programme, two six-lane structures and a ramp are planned as a single project package.

The works comprise a left-arm down ramp from the existing Owaisi Flyover towards Santosh Nagar, a six-lane bi-directional grade separator between Hafeez Babanagar Junction and the 100-Foot Balapur–Church Road Junction, and a six-lane bi-directional flyover at Bandlaguda–Errakunta Crossroads Junction.

Three works in one package

The grade separator will run from Omar Hotel through Metro Function Hall towards Shoaib Hotel, while the Bandlaguda–Errakunta flyover is intended to improve traffic movement through the busy junction. GHMC invited tenders for the three works in February. Against an estimated construction cost of ₹231.87 crore, KNR Constructions Ltd submitted a bid of ₹242.72 crore, around 4.68 per cent above the estimate. After two tender rounds reportedly received only a single bid, the government approved the selection. Including land acquisition, property acquisition and related expenses, the overall project cost is estimated at around ₹385 crore.

Quality monitoring planned

The project also includes dedicated project-management consultancy services covering proof checking, construction supervision, quality assurance, quality control and quality audits. The additional oversight is intended to ensure design and construction quality while the structures are being built along busy urban corridors.

Could improve airport-bound movement

The proposed structures are expected to ease congestion around Santosh Nagar, Hafeez Babanagar, Balapur, Bandlaguda and Errakunta and improve connectivity across adjoining South Hyderabad areas. They could also improve movement towards Balapur and Shamshabad, potentially benefiting traffic travelling between the Old City and the airport. However, the extent of any reduction in airport travel time will depend on how the upgraded corridors connect with the wider road network.

Part of wider H-CITY upgrade

The Old City package forms part of the broader H-CITY programme aimed at improving Hyderabad’s traffic infrastructure. Major works around KBR Park, including seven steel flyovers and seven underpasses, have an estimated cost of around ₹1,090 crore. For South Hyderabad, the immediate benefit of the Old City package will be improved junction capacity and traffic movement. Over time, better connectivity could also support residential and commercial activity along the upgraded corridors.
