South Hyderabad commuters may get traffic relief this month as final works gather pace
The long-awaited Santosh Nagar–Chanchalguda Steel Flyover is nearing completion, with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) expecting to open the facility to traffic later this month, subject to completion of the remaining works. Constructed under Hyderabad's Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), the 3.3-km, four-lane steel flyover is one of the city's major mobility projects aimed at easing congestion in South Hyderabad. The project has been under construction for over four years.
During a recent review, GHMC officials directed the executing agency to expedite the balance works and complete the project at the earliest. Officials said most of the major civil works have been completed, including all 85 spans and 85 piers, along with girder installation and bituminous road laying. The remaining works include construction of approach ramps, retaining walls, expansion joints, footpaths and other finishing activities before the flyover is opened to motorists.
Once operational, the flyover is expected to improve connectivity between Santosh Nagar and Chanchalguda, while easing traffic movement through IS Sadan, Saidabad, Champapet and adjoining junctions, which experience heavy congestion during peak hours. The project, being executed at an estimated cost of ₹620 crore, is expected to reduce travel time between Santosh Nagar and Chanchalguda and provide smoother movement for commuters travelling across South Hyderabad. Officials are targeting completion of the remaining works in the coming weeks before the flyover is formally inaugurated and opened for public use.
