Marble vs Tiles: Which Flooring Option Is Best for Your Home?

Buying a home is one step, but enhancing its aesthetic appeal is another. Flooring plays a crucial role in defining a home’s look and longevity. Marble:
Marble is a natural stone, largely sourced from Rajasthan, and is available in colours such as white, black, green and yellow. It offers a premium, elegant and royal appearance. However, marble absorbs water stains and tends to develop patches over time, gradually losing its shine. Not all marble extracted from mines is of first quality, and in some cases, low-grade marble is patched and sold.

If marble is offered at ₹40–₹60 per square foot, it is typically of inferior quality. Better-quality marble with good finishing usually costs between ₹200 and ₹250 per square foot. Installing marble flooring in a 12x12 room takes at least five to six days, with considerable material wastage. Marble is also not recommended for colder regions, as it can become slippery. Maintenance costs are relatively high.

Tiles:
High-definition, marble-look tiles are now widely available in the market. Companies such as Kajaria manufacture 12 mm thick tiles in large sizes like 6 feet by 3 feet. These tiles closely resemble marble in appearance and are available in a wide range of colours and designs. Good-quality tiles are available at around ₹50 per square foot, and even after including labour costs, the total expense generally remains under ₹100 per square foot. Tiles require minimal maintenance and do not absorb water.

For homeowners seeking low-maintenance, long-lasting and cost-effective flooring, tiles are the better choice. However, for those prioritising a luxurious, royal finish and willing to bear higher costs and maintenance, marble remains an option.
