Musi Riverfront Project to Include 6 Bridges, 4 Rubber Dams, 6-Lane Road
The Musi makeover combines flood protection, sewage interception, riverbank restoration, and landscaped promenades to reshape Hyderabad’s riverfront.
PROPERTY PULSE
Hyderabad’s Musi River corridor is all set for a major infrastructure overhaul, with six new bridges, a six-lane road, riverfront promenades, and flood protection measures planned under a project aimed at improving connectivity and creating public spaces.
The Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) has invited international bids for Zone-1A of the Musi Riverfront Development Project, which aims to improve the river’s environmental condition and develop public spaces and infrastructure along its banks.
According to the tender, the project covers the stretch between Himayat Sagar and Gandhi Sarovar (Bapu Ghat), extending from chainage 1+320 m to 8+850 m over a length of 7.53 km. The work is scheduled to be completed within two years (730 days), followed by five years (1,825 days) of operation and maintenance.
For the surrounding real estate market, improved road access, better sewage management, flood protection, and public amenities are among the proposed benefits.
The project objectives include economic revitalisation and land-value enhancement, although the actual impact on property values will depend on implementation and the extent to which neighbouring areas benefit.

Riverfront Project Works
River training and protection works account for 49.02% of the contract's payment allocation, making them the largest component. The work includes river cleaning, dredging, desilting, riverbed profiling, retaining walls, slope revetments, gabion mattresses, and nature-based protection measures.
Six new road bridges account for 11.49% of the allocation, including a cable-stayed bridge with architectural and landscape lighting. Another 10.17% is earmarked for four automated rubber dams, or inflatable weirs, designed to regulate water levels and facilitate sediment flushing.
Public spaces and landscaping account for 7.75%, covering riverfront promenades, plazas, viewing areas, parks, gazebos, commercial kiosks, open-air gyms, children's play areas, walkways, and cycle tracks. The plans also include 10 public bus bays or shelters and barrier-free pedestrian routes.
A six-lane main road corridor accounts for 5.87%, while two-lane service roads account for 4.07%. These roads will include medians, stormwater drains, footpaths and cycle tracks.
Pedestrian bridges and signalised crossings are also proposed to improve access between surrounding neighbourhoods and the riverfront.
Trunk sewer mains with a minimum diameter of 900 mm and interception and diversion structures will be developed to prevent untreated sewage from entering the river. This component accounts for 3.56% of the allocation.
Cross-drainage structures account for 1.67%, while illumination and electrical works account for 0.52%.
The flood protection system is designed for a one-in-100-year flood event, with a design discharge of 4,339 cubic metres per second for the Himayat Sagar reach. Specifications include a minimum freeboard of 1.8 metres and afflux limits below 50 mm.
At least 40% of the riverbank length must feature vegetated or hybrid green-grey protection, supported by a 10-metre riparian buffer and constructed wetlands at nala outfalls.
Social impact assessments have identified 505 structures in Zone-1A, including 191 permanent and 314 temporary structures.
