Metro Phase 2 moves towards consultant selection

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is advancing toward consultant selection, with four priority corridors being taken up initially. The proposed 122.9-km network across seven corridors is estimated to cost ₹38,595 crore.

Four corridors are being taken up first as approval process continues

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is moving forward with the process of appointing consultants for four priority corridors, taking the proposed expansion closer to the next stage of planning and implementation. The proposed Phase 2 network covers 122.9 km across seven corridors at an estimated cost of about ₹38,595 crore.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) is initially focusing on appointing general consultants for four corridors, with 12 firms participating in the recent pre-bid meeting. The four corridors are Nagole–Shamshabad Airport, covering 36.8 km; Raidurg–Kokapet, covering 11.6 km; MGBS–Chandrayangutta, covering 7.5 km; and LB Nagar–Hayathnagar, covering 7.1 km.

Airport and growth corridors

The proposed network would strengthen connections between the Old City, eastern Hyderabad, the western IT corridor and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Consultant selection will follow a Quality-and-Cost-Based Selection process. Technical quality will account for 70 of the 100 marks, including the firms’ previous project experience, completion performance, materials and warranties. The remaining 30 marks will be based on the qualifications of proposed experts.

Authorities may also inspect projects executed by shortlisted firms before making the final selection. The project still requires key approvals before construction-related activity can move ahead. The state government is pursuing Central government approval for the comprehensive Detailed Project Report. Once approvals and financing are secured, processes such as land acquisition, utility shifting and construction tenders can progress.

Meanwhile, the state is also working on a proposal to take over the existing Phase 1 metro network from L&T. SBI Caps has been entrusted with arranging financing, with a plan reportedly being examined to raise loans at lower interest rates and repay them over about 20 years. For Hyderabad’s real estate market, the proposed Phase 2 corridors could have significance beyond transportation.

Metro connectivity can improve accessibility to employment centres and residential areas, potentially supporting development along stations and corridors. The proposed links to Kokapet, the airport, Hayathnagar and the Old City could therefore influence future residential and commercial development. However, the extent of that impact will depend on approvals, financing, construction timelines and eventual commissioning.
